Costa Rica's Communities

Small communities are scattered all throughout the scenic mountains of Costa Rica.  The higher the elevation, the cooler the climate, making it literally possible to chose the climate in which to live. Surrounded by majestic mountains and volcanoes, the Central Valley is known for it's moderate spring-like temperatures.  Heading down out of  the mountains the temperatures start to rise, eventually reaching that of a warm summer's day.  And that's year-round.  For those who prefer to live  in a cooler climate, they can head up into the mountains to find fall-like temperatures, with beautiful views of the valleys below and the magnificent mountains just beyond.

The Central Valley

Costa Rica's Central Valley is home to the majority of this small country's population due to its spring-like weather, beautiful scenery, cultural activity and employment.  And the majority of the Central Valley's population dwell in the surrounding neighborhoods of San Jose.  Foreign residents living in Costa Rica tend to favor San Jose's western suburbs such as La Sabana, Rhomeser, Escazu, Bello Horizonte, Santa Ana and now even the Villa Colon area . . .                                  Orosi, Turrialba, Cartago

This area offers a more rural setting and a more pristine environment than San José, but that doesn't mean that you have to do without modern conveniences. This area offers everything that the Central Valley does, except company headquarters and government offices. So if you're not tied down to a job or government agency, check it out to see if Costa Rica's former capital province might suit you.

Guanacaste

Many foreigners retiring in Costa Rica have chosen to live in the Guanacaste area.  Four hours north of San Jose by car, this area is more arid than the Central Valley and is well-known for its beautiful white sand beaches, rocky cliffs, fishing and luxurious private communities.  Locally, Guanacaste is known for the cattle industry and its country atmosphere.  In the past 10 years many tourist related projects have been completed here offering luxury resorts and excellent golf courses . . .                     Quepos - Manuel Antonio

The beach area around Quepos -  Manuel  Antonio with its natural beauty has also become quite

popular with foreigners coming to Costa Rica.  This area is perhaps the country's most popular tourist attraction and new development is seen everywhere.  The small ex-banana port town of Quepos has become a major center for deep-sea fishing, adventure seekers and those just looking for a great beach.

Osa Peninsula - Drake's Bay

The Osa Peninsula, described as Costa Rica's "Last Frontier", provides an exotic, magical setting.  Osa is home to the renown Corcovado National Park, reported by National Geograhic as "the most biologically intense place on earth".  So if you like wildlife, the Osa Peninsula is the place for you featuring an amazing variety of nature's wonders, all at your fingertips. Incredibly, prices tend to be lower here than in other areas of Costa Rica. You can find almost anything, from a beach lot to a small ocean view farm to thousands of acres of pristine rainforest just waiting to be protected.
